PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating a man who escaped from an ambulance earlier today while being transported for medical care.
Sheriff David Thoroughman said 31‑year‑old Jeremy Copas had been taken into custody on a bench warrant for failing to appear on a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge. While being held at the jail, Copas reported that he needed medical attention and later appeared to become unresponsive, prompting staff to request an ambulance.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Copas had been granted a conditional release by a judge so he could receive treatment and then return to custody afterward. Conditional releases are commonly used for low‑level, non‑violent offenders to avoid unnecessary medical expenses for taxpayers.
During the transport, near the intersection of Waller and 16th Street, Copas reportedly jumped from the ambulance and ran from the area. Deputies and officers searched the neighborhood extensively but were unable to locate him.
Authorities said Copas’ last known address was an apartment on 17th Street in the Wayne Hills area of Portsmouth. Residents are urged not to approach him if seen and to call 9‑1‑1 immediately with any information. Callers may remain anonymous.
The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate how the escape occurred and is working to locate Copas.
