LUCASVILLE, Ohio — Troopers from the Portsmouth Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal two-vehicle crash at approximately 9:35 a.m. on June 21. The collision occurred on Dry Run Road, northwest of State Route 73 in Washington Township, Scioto County.

According to preliminary findings, a 2004 GMC Sierra driven by Robert D. Rife, 65, of West Portsmouth, was traveling southeast on Dry Run Road. A 2005 Yamaha V-Star 650 motorcycle operated by Jeffrey A. Hammonds, 50, also of West Portsmouth, was traveling northwest on the same roadway. Investigators determined the GMC crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the motorcycle.

Hammonds suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Rife was transported by Portsmouth Ambulance to Southern Ohio Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Assisting agencies included the Washington Township Fire Department, Portsmouth Emergency Ambulance Service, the Scioto County Coroner’s Office, and Central Wrecker Service.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Portsmouth Post.
