HILLSBORO, Ohio — A Hillsboro man is being remembered as a hero after he stepped in to stop an assault at a local gas station and was fatally injured in the process, according to family members and police.
Family says 49‑year‑old Billy Grooms was at a gas station on South High Street early Sunday with his son when they witnessed a woman being strangled. Grooms immediately intervened, confronting the attacker in an effort to protect her.
According to relatives, the suspect broke away, got into Grooms’ truck and ran him over while fleeing the scene.
Grooms suffered multiple broken bones and a traumatic brain injury. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors told the family his injuries were not survivable.
He is now set to save lives through organ donation. Hospital staff and loved ones will line the hallways for an honor walk as he makes his final journey.
The woman Grooms protected released a statement expressing deep gratitude, saying she believes his actions saved her life and that she will carry that with her forever.
Friends and family describe Grooms as selfless, kind, and always willing to help others. He leaves behind his wife and two sons and was the family’s sole provider. A fundraiser has been created to help support them during this time.
Hillsboro police say the investigation into the incident remains active.
