SANDUSKY, Ohio — Cole Floyd delivered a commanding performance on Lake Erie, locking in a Championship Round berth after winning the Qualifying Round at Suzuki Marine Stage 7 Presented by B&W Trailer Hitches. The Leesburg, Ohio pro tallied 63 bass for a two‑day total of 168 pounds, 4 ounces, earning the top spot and bypassing Saturday’s Knockout Round.

Floyd entered Day 2 trailing Jeff Sprague by seven pounds but quickly erased the deficit. After locating a fresh school of largemouth, he boated nearly 50 pounds in under an hour, flipping the leaderboard and building a lead that Sprague fought to close. Despite a strong push and a 6‑pound, 3‑ounce smallmouth that earned Sprague the Berkley Big Bass Award, Floyd’s largemouth bite proved too strong to match.

Floyd added 78 pounds, 8 ounces on Friday alone, finishing 17 pounds, 6 ounces ahead of Sprague. His strategy centered on managing pressure on his most productive areas, and he avoided revisiting the stretch that produced his record 87‑pound opening period on Day 1. He reported confidence that the fish remain unpressured and expects strong potential heading into Sunday.

The Qualifying Round win also allows Floyd to avoid Saturday’s forecasted high winds, which can make Lake Erie challenging. He said he is eager to return to his schools of largemouth and believes the areas still hold significant numbers of fish.

The Knockout Round will determine the remaining nine anglers who will join Floyd in the Championship Round. Several competitors used Day 2 to secure crucial points toward REDCREST 2027 qualification and Bass Pro Tour requalification, including Mark Rose, Nick Hatfield, Colby Miller, James Elam and Marshall Hughes.

The Angler of the Year race also tightened. Zack Birge rallied late to climb to fifth, maintaining his lead over Jacob Wheeler, who advanced to the Knockout Round after jumping from 22nd to 13th.

A total of 574 bass weighing 1,681 pounds, 7 ounces were caught Friday by the 51 anglers. The top 25 after Day 2 advanced to the Knockout Round, while Floyd moves directly to Sunday’s final.
