In the heart of Bracken County, Cleo’s Legacy is making a difference for homeless dogs, turning compassion into action. Founded in 2024 by Alex Siska, the organization was born out of personal loss and a deep commitment to animal welfare. After losing her soul-dog, Cleo, to old age, Alex transformed grief into purpose, honoring Cleo’s legacy by helping dogs in need.

A Legacy of Love and Rescue

Cleo’s story began with hardship. As a baby, she was brought home infested with parasites, but her infectious joy and empathy shaped Alex’s path. Cleo’s presence opened Alex’s heart to rescue work, inspiring her to take in stray dogs and assist local shelters. Through hands-on experience, Alex saw a gap in resources—too few volunteers, insufficient funding, and shelters overwhelmed with abandoned dogs. Rather than accept these struggles as roadblocks, Cleo’s Legacy was established to create solutions.

Since its founding, the organization has worked tirelessly to provide fostering, adoption services, medical care, and financial support for training. Guided by the belief that community involvement is key, Cleo’s Legacy encourages individuals to help make the world better for vulnerable dogs.

Ways to Get Involved

As a foster-based rescue, Cleo’s Legacy thrives on open doors and willing hearts. There are numerous ways to support their mission.

  • Assist at fundraising events

  • Pass out flyers to spread awareness

  • Participate in doggy day trips

  • Volunteer at adoption events

  • Help transport dogs in need

  • Support vet visits

  • Walk, bathe, and photograph shelter dogs

Fostering: A Life-Changing Experience

Cleo’s Legacy understands that fostering is one of the most impactful ways to help a homeless dog. Foster families provide a safe and loving environment while a dog waits for their forever home. The rescue covers all vet bills, food, and supplies, making it easy for individuals to provide care without financial burden.

Beyond just helping the dogs, fostering frees up shelter space and allows rescues to save more lives. It’s a rewarding experience that brings joy, companionship, and the fulfillment of knowing you’ve changed an animal’s future.

A Personal Connection

During a visit to Local 12 News, The Leesburg Times Editor-in-Chief, Rylan Hackworth, had the opportunity to meet Alex, the Dog Director, and one of Cleo’s Legacy’s rescues. Witnessing firsthand the passion and dedication of the team reinforced the organization’s unwavering mission to uplift and protect the dogs who need them the most.

Making an Impact, One Dog at a Time

Cleo’s Legacy is not just a rescue—it’s a movement. Built on the belief that every dog deserves love, safety, and care, the organization continues to fight for those left behind, offering them hope for a better future. Whether through volunteering, fostering, or donating, every person has the power to make a difference.

For those looking to help, Cleo’s Legacy welcomes all who share their vision. Together, we can ensure that Cleo’s memory lives on, not just in stories, but in every life saved.
