Sara’s bridal work.

Alterations by Sara is the product of heritage, heart, and decades of hands‑on experience. Sara is a single mother who homeschools her ten‑year‑old son, Arlee, while running a steadily growing alterations business from her home. She also spends her spare time helping others through natural healing with oils and supplements. Her life is built around service, creativity, and care, shaped in part by her eight years in the Army Reserves, where she sewed patches and repairs onto the uniforms of fellow soldiers.

Her sewing journey began when she was just two years old. Family stories describe her sitting on her grandmother’s lap, watching every stitch and learning to thread needles with surprising focus. By high school, she was designing and sewing her own clothes, even showcasing her work in a school talent‑show fashion walk. What started as a childhood fascination grew into a lifelong skill and, eventually, a business.

Alterations by Sara began with fittings held outside her home and at local Hillsboro shops such as The Linen Closet and a gently used clothing store. She remembers those early days clearly, especially the times she fitted prom dresses with baby Arlee strapped to her back, even while kneeling on the floor. As her clientele expanded, she moved fittings into her home, where Arlee now helps greet customers, open the gate, entertain younger children, and prepare the space.

Today, Sara offers a wide range of services including bridal and formal alterations, men’s formalwear, streetwear adjustments, and custom projects during the winter offseason. Among brides, her most requested service is adding bra cups, a detail she says is essential because gowns often have so much structure that “the girls get lost in there.”

Her work stands out for its competitive pricing, precise measurements, and her ability to listen closely to each client’s vision. She notes that while her prices are lower than many shops in Columbus or Cincinnati, the cost of alterations depends entirely on the complexity of the garment, not the price of the dress itself. Bridal and formal alterations are difficult to estimate before work begins, but she always provides an estimate before clients leave their first fitting.

Sara’s favorite projects are bridal and formal gowns, especially those with lace, beads, and intricate fabrics. She also enjoys the bright colors and bold designs of prom and homecoming dresses. Working with clients of all ages and personalities is one of the most rewarding parts of her job. She loves seeing repeat customers, including former prom clients who later return with their wedding gowns.

Her fitting process is detailed and personal. Clients are welcomed into a fitting area surrounded by large mirrors. After helping them into their gown, she begins at the top with straps or shoulders, then moves to bra cups, sides, hems, and bustles, pinning carefully until the fit is perfect. The second fitting is when clients pick up their gown and complete payment.

Some projects hold special meaning. One bride asked for a “something blue,” and Sara embroidered the couple’s names and wedding date inside the gown using her Husqvarna’s lettering function. Another standout creation was a rainbow peekaboo bustle, one of the most unique designs she has ever completed.

As her business grows, Sara continues to invest in her craft. She recently purchased a new serger to handle stretch knits and now keeps three machines threaded for different stitches to save time. She is currently revamping her sewing space to handle double the volume and hopes to double her business within the next year through marketing and word‑of‑mouth referrals.

For Sara, the emotional side of her work is just as important as the technical. Being trusted with a wedding gown is a responsibility she takes to heart. She used to kneel and pray before each gown, giving thanks for the opportunity to be part of someone’s special day. Though kneeling is harder now, she still pauses to offer gratitude.

Above all, Sara wants Southern Ohio to know that she is dedicated to making every client’s dream fit a reality. As a fourth‑generation seamstress, she sees her skill as a blessing and is grateful to share it with the community. With competitive pricing, a peaceful home environment, and a kind, attentive approach, Alterations by Sara continues to grow as a trusted part of life’s most meaningful moments.
